Surulere local government under the able chairmanship of Hon. Tajudeen Ajide has played host to the first ever Women Assembly in Lagos State. The event occurred at the local government Secretariat.
The participants for the Assembly were drawn from five Local Governments/Local Council Development Areas which include Surulere and Mainland LGs, Coker – Aguda, Yaba and Itire – ikate LCDAs. Those in attendance were representatives of National Council of Women Society, Religious Bodies, Women Leaders from political Wards and LGs, Marketwomen, Traditional Institutions and Physically challenged from the participating LGs /LCDAs.
Discussing the agenda, Commission for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Hon. (Mrs) Cecilia Bolaji Dada made it known that the purpose for the Assembly is to interact, educate and sensitize the Lagos Women folks on sexual based and gender based violence, as well as domestic violence. The need to maintain mental health and good well-being by having a regular health check to know their status and also maintaining a balanced diet was buttressed.
Discussing further, the Commissioner said there is need for women to have self esteem and carriage, so that their deserved respect would be accorded. “Lagos State government have zero tolerance for women in Lagos who are idle and unengaged, more reason, the government have in place about 18 Skills Acquisition Centres that can be accessed for various vocations, free of charge.” says the Commissioner. She advised that women should take advantage of this Centres and get engaged.
The Commissioner also advised that women should cultivate the habit of saving for raining days and financial management in order to avoid financial embarrassment.
Participants were also advised on how to always keep personal hygiene and cleanliness as antidote to marital issues of spouse’s abandoning marriages, the need for regular communication between spouses as it aids healthy marital life.
Welcoming the guests earlier, the host Chairman, Hon Tajudeen Ajide, appreciated the role of women folks in nation building and give total support to the Women Assembly while applauding the gesture of playing host to the program. The Chairman’s speech was read by the Secretary to the LG, Prince Muiz Dosumu.
The Chairmen of the other four Local Government and Local Council Development Areas were represented.
