Surulere LG Legislators Hold Public Hearing On 13 Proposed Bills

Law is made in association not in isolation and one of the primary functions of the legislature is to make laws. The 8th Legislative Assembly of Surulere LG, in exercising its function, gathered Surulere stakeholders in form of public hearing to discuss thirteen (13) proposed bills that are centered around having a sanctity and serene LG for even development.

The public hearing as a stage in legislative procedure requires a mature reciprocal dialogue between stakeholders and the government to reach appropriate decisions as it affects the sanctity of our community.

Hon. Tajudeen Ajide, the Chairman, whose address was delivered by the vice chairman, Hon. Sulaimon Yusuf, appreciated everyone and gave an insight to the reason for the public hearing. “This government has embarked on so many projects and they (projects) were all emanated from the cries of the people, so we believe governance is symbiotic and about the people, hence the need for this gathering”, says the Chairman.

On her part, the Leader of the Council, Barr.(Mrs) Barakat Bakare-Akande welcomed everybody to what she referred to as the first Public Hearing on bills and urged all to contribute to the debate as it will form the basis of their judgment during deliberation before the bills are passed into law. She said ” l want to remind you that without your mandate we will not be here. It is you we are representing and for you to know that we are representing you very well, that is why we called you all to come together as one to exercise your fundamental human right of contributing your own quota and input on the proposed bills”.

The president of the Customary court, Otunba Adeyinka Ojora-Adejiyan, a retired permanent secretary, who also witnessed the event was full of gratitude and eulogised the legislative arm for being alive to their responsibility while urging other Councils to emulate what Surulere LG Councillors have done.

The proposed bills are 
1) Radio and Television rate bill
2) Liquor and Allied products offer for sale permit bill
3) Registration of Drycleaning and laundry house bill
4) Regulation of operation of car wash bill
5) Shop/kiosk rate bill
6) Cutting of Trunk C tarred road bill
7) Market regulation bill
8) Private/Public Toilet and other connected purposes bill
9) Street naming regulation bill
10) Destruction/Removal of LG road signs and abandoned vehicles, one way drive and one lane parking control bill
11) Motorcycle (okada) and Tricycle for commercial purpose regulation and control bill.
12) Pest Control bill
13) Merriment/Entertainment/Road closure bill.

Stakeholders in attendance were Baale of Surulere, High Chief Jinadu Awoyemi, Market men and women , CDC, Arewa community, Artisans, farmers, NURTW/RTEAN, Okada riders association amongst other.

However, they were all urged to send in , if necessary, any other contributions to the Legislative Arm or Office of the Executive Chairman. It was also reiterated that they should make use of the Surulere Citizens Complaints Center with the number *08107615690* for any observation or happenings around them that require government intervention.
