Child Rights are fundamental freedoms and inherent Rights of all human beings below the age of 18.
The Executive Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Hon.Tajudeen Ajide commended the enormous efforts of the Lagos State Government towards the eradication of child abuse in the society, and its bid to provide maximum protection for children.
The LG boss implored all parents and care-givers to complement the efforts of the Government in achieving total eradication of inhuman act in the society, by providing adequate protection and responsibilities for the care of the children.
The Representative of the British Council, Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (ROLAC), Mrs. Abimbola Ushie enlightened all about ROLAC, adding that the programme is funded by the British Council in making sure that the Rights of every child is protected.
The Project Consultant, Dr. Willy Mamah, emphasized that the enactment of the child’s Rights Law in the Local Government will protect children from violence, neglect and abuse. He applauded the Lagos State Government for taking into consideration by creating a Center for Child’s Rights and Law under the Youth and Social Development Ministry.
He noted that the members of the committee are saddled with the responsibilities of gathering statistics in knowing the number of children that are being violated, popularization of child’s Rights Law and also ensuring that child abuse is reduced to a minimal.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Dr. Mrs. Bola Balogun was represented by Mrs Yewande Falugba, who noted that Surulere Local Government is one of the five Local Governments chosen in Lagos State for the inauguration of Local Governments Child’s Rights implementation committees.
She however congratulated the newly inaugurated members of the committee, charging them to complement the efforts of the Government in making sure that the well-being of every child is Paramount to them.
The Committee which consists of 23 members from Surulere LG were inaugurated with an oath taking which was conducted by the Head of Legal Unit, Surulere LG, Hajia Khadijat Tijjani.
The Senior Special Adviser to the Chairman on Community Development Committee(CDC), Mr Kayode Adeyemi, also a member of the inaugurated committee spoke on behalf of the members of the committee, promised to discharge their duties as expected and will also ensure that no Child’s Right is violated.
The Council Manager Mr Akeem Adesanya, who also spoke for the Chairman appreciated the good efforts of the British Council in ensuring that children are given opportunities to enjoy an adequate standard of living.
