History was made on Sunday 10th February, 2019 as the Council of Baales and Chiefs in Surulere LG organized the 1st Surulere Day with pomp and pageantry.

This celebration was widely acknowledged as a good omen in the history of the LG and being the first of its kind, all people that matters in Surulere graced the occasion and with pride, they all could not hold their joy.

Welcoming the guest, the Chairman, Council of Baales and Chiefs in Surulere, High Chief Kamil Oyekanmi Hassan, Baale of Majolate, said he was delighted that the Council could organise such event bringing all sons and daughters of the LG together and specially thanked the Executive Chairman of Surulere LG, Hon. Tajudeen Ajide for his tremendous support towards organising the event. Special mention was also made of the Council Manager of the LG, Mr. Akeem Adesanya for his support.

In the speech of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Ajide, the Chief host, delivered by the Supervisor for Chieftaincy Affairs and Boundary Matters, Hon. Murtala Saaka Oluwa, he said Surulere has become the only LG that has unifying identity and this day would go along way in unifying more, all sons and daughters of Surulere while thanking the Council of Baales and Chiefs for the great idea and promise to continue to support the initiative in all ramifications. He however enjoined all and sundry to also give support to such idea.

The Leader of the House of Representative, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, also could not hold his joy and he made a lot of encomium on the organisers referring to the event as a right step in the right direction and believing that being the 1st of its kind, anybody that calls himself Surulerian must identify with it. He however promised to take the event to the next level whereby different activities would be introduced to it and make it a carnival-like in nature, God willing by next year. He said, “it is going to be a yearly event where it will span  three or more days to celebrate”.

Hon. Gbajabiamila, who referred to Surulere LG Chairman, Hon. AJIDE as the governor of Surulere made a lot of commendable suggestion that would make the event worthwhile and remarkable years after.

He believes that for next year to be more successful, a committee should be put in place to compile a book on the history of Surulere narrating its evolvement, economic, social and political progression where the book would be launched at the next event and distributed to all students in Surulere in other to know what Surulere is.

He also suggested a committee that would compose an anthem for Surulere whereby it would be synonymous to us and become an envy of other LGs.

He thanked Hon. AJIDE for his developmental strides and providing effective leadership to the people of Surulere.

Notable individuals that graced the event were two former deputy speakers of Lagos House of Assembly, Rt. Hons H A B Fashina and Adetoun Adeniran, incumbent member of House of Assembly, Hon. Desmond Elliot, APC Chairman, Hon. Shakiru Ajao, former Executive secretary, Chief Mrs Bamidele Hussain, former Sole Administrator, Hon. Sheriff Balogun.

Also present were royal fathers led by Oba Lateef Adams, Onikate of Ikate, several Baales and Chiefs, Iyalojas and Babaolojas, traditional worshippers, the CDAs/CDC, Hausa , Ibo and South south leaders.

Also worthy of reckoning was the presence of the Councillors led by the Deputy Leader, Hon. Adebayo, Vice Chairman, Hon. Sulaimon Yusuf, Secretary to the LG, Prince Muiz Dosumu and other members of the Executive committee. The Council Manager, Mr Akeem Adesanya and Human Resource Officer, Mr Abiodun Babington were also in attendance.

The Executive Chairmen of Ifako Ijaye LG and Itire Ikate LCDA, Hons. Toba Oke and Ahmed Apatira respectively were in attendance.

A lot of cultural and traditional displays added glamour to the event while a veteran Fuji musician, Saheed Osupa and DJ Mickey were on hand to supply music to the admiration of all present.
